Backyard Birding: The White-Breasted Nuthatch… and My ‘Old Man’ Confession

A tiny aviator, perched just right, she watches the sky, anticipating flight; one flutter away from adventure anew, then off from the fence, into skies of blue…

Well… guess what? I’ve crossed over into old man territory. Yeah, I just purchased my very first bird feeder.

I’ve actually wanted one for years, but my outdoor cat would’ve considered it an all-you-can-eat buffet with curbside service. But since she passed a year or so ago, I made the leap!

But wait! It gets worse…

I also downloaded a bird identification app. I even signed up for their special all you can identify birds part of the app, too!

What’s happening to me?! Somewhere along the way I went from thinking I was cool to knowing I’m definitely not cool! I’m now like, “Hey, neighbor! Did you see the red-bellied woodpecker this morning?”

Which, by the way, have you ever noticed that their bellies are mostly white? I mean, who named this bird? I guess the giant flaming-red head apparently wasn’t worth mentioning. Lol!

Ugh… anyway, I’m now like one cardigan away from becoming Mr. Rogers… if Mr. Rogers had a gray goatee, quoted aviation regulations, and got way too excited over a White-Breasted Nuthatch showing up in the backyard! Yeah, well… I just learned about that one!  Are you impressed? 😜

Next thing you know I’ll be standing at the kitchen window with binoculars, yelling, “Mildred! The goldfinches are back!”

Granted, I don’t even know a Mildred… but I’m pretty sure that’s what old guys say. Lol!

So, please check on me. If I start naming the squirrels and arguing with blue jays, it may already be too late. And my daughter’s may be right… I am turning into a Disney princess. 🤦😂
