What do you enjoy most about writing?
It’s the great escape hatch from the world of technical manuals. Don’t get me wrong, I actually like writing about airplanes, performance charts, and the thrilling world of thrust reversers and auto throttles. But after a full day of crafting sentences that sound like they belong in a courtroom exhibit, it’s refreshing to sneak off into the wilder, less buttoned-down side of writing.

The thing is, creative writing lets me color outside the lines. Technical writing has a lot of lines—and every one of them must be straight, labeled, and FAA-approved. But when I’m writing creatively, I get to break free of airworthiness directives and Part 23 airworthiness standards. I won’t get in trouble if my character says something technically inaccurate, or if my pirate accidentally drinks a Godfather instead of rum. Though, let’s be honest… he’d probably prefer the Godfather. Just saying… 🤷😂
At the end of the day, that’s what I enjoy most: freedom to be creative. Writing creatively reminds me that words aren’t just checklists and performance data—they’re playground swings, open highways, and sometimes, pizza-shaped dinosaurs. It’s fun, unpredictable, and best of all, nobody needs to sign off on it with a stamp of approval.
