Joy, Prayer, Gratitude, Love — and Maybe Coffee: My Secret Recipe for a Good Life

What are the most important things needed to live a good life?

Everybody these days is trying to crack the code for living a good life. You can’t scroll two thumb flicks without some influencer selling you a life-changing planner, a magical morning routine, or a $12 smoothie that tastes suspiciously like blended grass clippings.

But while there are plenty of things that might help—like exercise, a steady job, or finally remembering your Netflix password—what are the most important things you need for a good life?

Well, call me old-fashioned, but I think the best advice comes from a very reliable source: the Bible.

One section in particular is a favorite of mine: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:

“Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.”

And if you really want to hit the bonus round of life, top it off with Jesus’ greatest commandment: love.

That’s it, four ingredients. No expensive subscriptions. No “grind mindset.” No complicated spreadsheets. Just mix the following ingredients in the big bowl of life:

  • Joy – Not to be confused with the feeling you get when your Amazon package arrives a day early—although, let’s be honest, that’s pretty close. Real joy is deeper. It’s like WiFi for your soul. Even when life’s signal bars are weak, joy keeps you connected.
  • Prayer – Think of it like a constant text thread with God. Except you don’t have to worry about typos, and He doesn’t leave you on read. Pray continually—the big stuff, the small stuff, and yes, even about finding a parking spot.
  • Gratitude – Give thanks in all circumstances. Not just when you win the lottery or find a taco truck on a random Tuesday. Even when the WiFi’s out, the coffee’s cold, and you step on a LEGO… again!
  • Love – This one’s the kicker. Jesus said it’s the greatest commandment. Love God, love people. Even the ones who don’t use their turn signal. Even the ones who drive 10 mph below the speed limit in the fast land—especially them!

Now, I’ll be the first to admit: I’m not perfect at following all this. Some days my joy looks more like sarcasm, my prayers are mostly just “help,” and my gratitude takes a vacation. As for loving everyone? Let’s just say it’s a work in progress—especially at the DMV.

But that’s the thing about a good life: it’s not about being perfect. It’s about trying. It’s about aiming for joy when it’s easier to complain, praying when it’s easier to worry, giving thanks when it’s easier to grumble, and loving when it’s easier to ghost.

So the next time you’re tempted to buy that $249 “life optimization” course, remember: you’ve already got the secret recipe—joy, prayer, gratitude, love.

Oh—and maybe a little coffee, too. ☕God invented that for a reason… just saying. 🤷😜
